TCL's most recent TVs have been upgraded from Roku to full-fledged Google TV.

TCL is a major player in the low-cost television market. Although the company makes a few sets that run Android, the majority of its products rely on Roku's software to fulfill all of your built-in entertainment needs. TCL promised at CES that it would sell its first Google TV in 2021, and with today's announcement, it is following through on that promise.

In our review of last year's Chromecast, we praised Google's refreshed entertainment platform, and the new TCL 5-Series and 6-Series offer the same experience without the need for a dongle. The company plans to keep selling all of its Roku competitors, but the Google TV models' design and specs have been improved. For example, the 5-Series has a slimmer bezel around its 4K QLED panel, as well as a variable refresh rate and an "Auto Game Mode" for lower latency while gaming.

The 6-Series, on the other hand, features 4K at 120Hz, which is a significant upgrade over the original Roku models. TCL's previous models could only output 1440p at 120Hz, so this is ideal for anyone looking to future-proof their next TV for when a PS5 or Xbox Series X becomes available. You could even run both consoles at maximum performance without having to swap cables thanks to the two HDMI 2.1 inputs. Aside from that, you'll get the same fantastic mini-LED panel with an entirely new operating system that looks and feels a lot more modern.

When you switch to Google TV, you get full support for casting from your phone, which is ideal for when you don't want to use a remote to navigate through an interface. Both the 5-Series and 6-Series have microphones built right into the television for hands-free voice control. Any privacy concerns should be alleviated by a physical switch that disables always-on listening. Because the bundled remote also supports button-activated voice commands, you can still search without a keyboard in your home if you don't have an always-on microphone.

All of TCL's new Google TV sets (with the exception of the 75" 6-Series) will be available for pre-order later today, with delivery expected in the coming weeks. The 5-Series starts at $599 for a 50-inch TV, and the 6-Series begins at $949 for a 55-inch TV. Use the links below to check out all of them at Best Buy, though the current prices are higher than TCL's suggested MSRP.
